The Association of American Geographers, in conjunction with the University of Virginia's College of Arts & Sciences and the American Council of Learned Societies, is organizing a symposium on geography and the humanities. The symposium will be held at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville on June 22-24, 2007. The symposium will include a special event at nearby Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's historic estate. Thirty to fifty participants are sought, approximately one-third drawn from each of the following categories:
- geographers who have engaged the humanities directly in their work
- scholars in the humanities who have integrated geography or GIS into their work
- popular writers or artists who provide a geographically-informed view in works of fiction, art, or film.
Those interested in participating in the symposium as presenters should submit a one-page summary of their proposed topic, describing relevant research conducted and previous directly-related publications, along with a brief resume or CV to: Geography and the Humanities Symposium Applications Committee, c/o Douglas Richardson at drichardson@aag.org. Applications for participation should be received no later than December 12, 2006. Earlier submission is encouraged. In order to defray the costs of participation, applicants in financial need who are accepted for participation in the symposium may apply for funding to support travel costs.
